Lifestyle Design is the intentional practice of cultivating a joyful, fulfilling life on your own terms. I first learned about Lifestyle Design in 2015 while reading Tim Ferriss’ The 4-Hour Workweek, in which he outlines a series of steps and tools to help readers determine what kind of life they want to live and how to make it a reality. Although I don’t use all of Ferriss’ tips and tricks, and have since cultivated a much more personal definition of Lifestyle Design, I still recommend this 15-year old book to friends and clients because it created a massive shift in my life.
For me, Lifestyle Design is all about taking concrete steps each day to create a life you love. It’s about building and enjoying a life that is filled with the things and people that help you show up as your best self each day. Lifestyle Design is also about eliminating the things that try to steal your joy–things like self-doubt, energy vampires, and low-vibration interactions. When we decide to shift our focus away from the things that drain us and pour our energy into that which will elevate us, we grow in ways we never thought possible. We begin to take chances, bet on ourselves, and prioritize our own happiness, which attracts more abundance and joy into our lives. We are effectively redesigning ourselves one choice, one intentional action, at a time.
Designing your ideal life will require you to let go of the things that are holding you back spiritually, emotionally, and mentally, and that is a scary prospect for some. That’s why so many people continue to move through their lives like zombies, mindlessly trudging through what they have to do while hoping to one day do the things they want to do. Why wait? Do what brings you joy right now, and then figure out how to make that the norm rather than the exception! I’m not saying you have to run out and quit your job or move to Costa Rica tomorrow, but cultivating your dream life starts with making intentional changes everyday so that you can become what you’ve always wanted to be.
